AN overhaul of commonwealth agencies dealing with the public has been ordered, to create a single approach to reporting child abuse and domestic violence.
Human Services Minister Joe Ludwig said he was "shocked" when he discovered there was no central approach.
Under the changes, all agencies will improve procedures to identify families at risk of child abuse and domestic violence and refer them to appropriate crisis and support services.
Senator Ludwig has asked the agencies in his portfolio to implement this unified approach because he fears some people are being missed.
The agencies are: Centrelink, Medicare Australia, Child Support Agency, Australian Hearing and CRS Australia.
